Spike gets his recognition.

At long last, Spike Lee has finally won an Academy Award in a competitive category, the first in his lengthy career. It was for Best Adapted Screenplay that the filmmaker took home the coveted statue, an honor that was appropriately presented by Lee’s fellow Morehouse brother Samuel L. Jackson.

His uniform of choice, was an all purple suit combo, a clear homage to the late Prince, with a pair of gold Jordans to match. As he graced the stage, Lee jumped into Jackson’s arms in an unfiltered gesture of camaraderie that echoed the energy of all Spike Lee fans in a moment that has been a long time coming for the legendary director.

As his speech began, audiences at home were met by silence as Spike clearly said something that needed to be censored. According to New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan, Lee’s words were, “Do not turn that motherfucking clock on” in reference to the timer placed on all acceptance speeches.

Naturally, Lee’s speech was charged delivery with plenty of political references as he closed things out by directly touching on the upcoming election.

"The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let's all mobilize," he said to close his speech. "Let's all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let's do the right thing! You know I had to get that in there."
