Camila Cabello reveals why she left Fifth Harmony for the first time since her split.

Camila Cabello has a new single making some headway on the charts right now, with a new album due out later this month. The 20-year-old pop star seems to have a lot going for her, but questions about her departure from girl group Fifth Harmony and the fallout from that decision continue to dog the young singer. Finally, more than a year after she split from the group, Cabello has gone on record as to why she decided to strike out on her own.

In a lengthy profile piece published by the New York Times, Cabello revealed that a 2015 collaboration with Shawn Mendes was the beginning of the end of her tenure with the group. After that track was out in the open, the rest of Fifth Harmony's relationship with her turned rather icy. Here's the detailed explanation, as per interviewer Reggie Ugwu:

She said that her collaboration in late 2015 with [Shawn] Mendes — the first time a Fifth Harmony member released music under her own name — had created tension; that she had asked to help write lyrics for Fifth Harmony songs and was rebuffed; that she initially wanted to stay in the group while working on a solo album but the other members shut her out instead.

Things went from bad to worse after that point in time, where the limiting environment that became Cabello's place in Fifth Harmony proved to be too much for her to bear. “It became clear that it was not possible to do solo stuff and be in the group at the same time,” she said. "If anyone wants to explore their individuality, it’s not right for people to tell you no.”
