Trevor Noah may have nudged Black History Month back on track in its final hour. The comedian's appearance at the Academy Awards prompted cascading exclaims of astonishment and praise. When Noah stood onstage last night to present Black Panther, he strung the audience members along for a quick spin most of them would only recognize after the event.

His spiel was humorous throughout, but the very last part is what created the sensation.

“Growing up as a young boy in Wakanda, I would see King T’Challa flying over our village, and he would remind me of a great Xhosa phrase: Abelungu abazi ubu ndiyaxoka, which means: ‘In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart.’”

The crowd simply applauded as expected. Viewers who do not understand the South African language came to find out that the phrase actually translates to, "White people don't know I'm lying."
